Short Fuse creative writing workshops.

THE UNCANNY

Saturday 14th November
Are you sitting comfortably? Cloning, parallel realities, talking animals, corpses, doppelgangers, humanoids, prosthetic flesh and body sculpting, freaks and demons - repulsion, abjection and the unexplained…

In this writing workshop we will take a trip to the eeriest corners of our imagination. What makes us feel unsettled? What takes us out of our comfort zone? With reference to Freud’s theory of the Unheimlich we will look at examples of literature that has used the uncanny as a device for disturbing the reader, and the relevance of this notion to today’s world, where technology and science is making erstwhile nightmares a reality. We look at how we can write and perform stories to reflect this and put a shiver down our spines.

Slot reserved at Short Fuse December 6th for one story.

All workshops led by two experienced writers and creative writing teachers. Groups small for maximum personal attention.

Cost - £25, three concession spaces at £17

For booking please email us in the first instance - contact us

Short Fuse will be hosting more writing workshops in spring 2010

Seeking submissions for Short Lives

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Short Fuse is planning two extra nights for 2010 in Brighton, Short Lives and Short Fuse Later. We are seeking submissions of text based short pieces: Live Art that involves text with narrative, experimental live literature, short fiction and playlets for our ‘Short Lives’ nights, and for Short Fuse Later we are looking for edgy short pieces, that might be more ‘extreme’ or contentious in nature. Erotic fiction, Crime, Noir, Fantasy, Horror, and life anecdotes that challenge, disturb, shock or disrupt our everyday view of the world. Send ideas, proposals and submissions to shortfusestories@yahoo.co.uk

Encounter by Ian Breckon

This was in 1974, and the light had that granular diffusion, the colours muzzy and polaroid-bright. I took Route 1 north along the coast towards Fort Bragg; Nixon was on the radio, and bombs in England and Italy, and massacres in Israel. All the way, the hired car hot above the blaze of the ocean, I was thinking about the question I would ask. Read more …

The Killing Hour of Low Tide by Richard Makin

I am writing on the beach as he approaches. In one hand he holds a white teapot, at a tilt to spill green tea on the shingle. In the other two mugs of the same white.
It’s spilling. Read more …
