The postman brings a parcel. But it is not for me: it’s for my son. Some computer part, I think. I wasn’t expecting a parcel but all the same, I feel bad that it’s not mine. I would have liked a surprise. Things have been so predictable lately.

“I haven’t seen you lately,” I say.
“I’ve been ill,” the postman says.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Read more …

A Glow by Juliet West

The daffodils were spilled across the landing carpet and the window was wide open, letting in a blast of cold night air. The glass vase was rocking on the sill, horizontal, leaking its last drips of cloudy water.

I walked towards the window, an image flaring in my mind: your body crumpled on the patio, skull smashed, arms bent into crazy angles.

You wouldn’t…surely?

I looked down onto the slabs of York stone. In the darkness I could make out the iron bench. The watering can. The terracotta pot with the tulip shoots bursting through.

I have almost nothing from my Mother’s family. Others hoard the sentimental or the precious but my Grandmother was not a saver, definitely not a hoarder. Even the year old jar of honey in her kitchen larder was thrown out, despite my Mother’s protests that they’d found honey in the tombs of the pharaohs that was still edible. Submitting stories

Short Fuse is one of Sussex’s best short fiction nights. Writers of short stories can showcase their work at our live lit nights which take place monthly at Komedia’s Studio Bar in Brighton and at The Rooms Cafe Bar in St Leonards/Hastings.

Stories that are selected to be read are then published on our website, which serves both to promote Short Fuse writers’ work while offering a great read for fans of the short story.

If you want to submit a story please follow the guidelines:

Stories should be between 50-3000 words. Please be aware that we love short stories and read everything sent to us, but unfortunately, due to our high number of submissions and the fact that we run this project on a shoestring budget, we are not always able to get back to everyone. If you haven’t heard after three weeks it probably means we won’t have picked your story this time. But please don’t be put off! Sometimes it’s a matter of how the line-up works for that month. Best approach is to come along and check out the kinds of short stories we do accept.

You can copy and paste your story here:

At Euston bodies fell from the crowded tube train like lumpy food from a can. Grace navigated the sweaty tunnels like a fox, sticking to the walls. Read more …
