Nouvelle Noir - writer’s workshop

Saturday 17th of October
Komedia’s Studio Bar. 10am – 1pm.

Tales from Brighton’s gutters! We look at this increasingly popular genre of ‘noir’ rooted in the crime novels of the 30s and 40s and at how we can use and update its traditional ingredients: Clever urban dialogue and a skinned down, razor-sharp prose style; a mix of gritty realism and escapism; moral ambiguity and scenes charged with sexual tension and violence; dark and seedy atmospheres; rain and heat and shadows; femmes fatales and venal characters; page turning plot lines. We will look at some enduring classics and some modern takes on this exciting genre. Through fun writing exercises designed to mine material from our own sordid backyards of experience and imagination, we will craft our own ‘Nouvelle Noir’ short story. The aim is for every participant to complete, or at least, start their own story and learn how to read it in front of a live audience.

Slot reserved at Short Fuse November 8th for one story!

All workshops led by two experienced writers and creative writing teachers. Groups small for maximum personal attention

Cost - £25, three concession spaces at £17
